South Big Horn County- Basin/Greybull Properties
Basin became the county seat of newly formed Big Horn County in 1896 when 33 voters, living mostly in dugouts, populated "Basin City." From these humble beginnings this farming community grew and now focuses around a large bean-seed treating plant. Thanks to a 1910 tree and shrub campaign and the 1936 "lilac Town" drive, the streets of Basin are lined with sweet smelling hedges and glorious shade trees. Basin is home to the main office of the Tri County Telephone Association Inc. This very progressive and community minded company provides fiber optic phone, internet and cable services to the Big Horn Basin.
Greybull and Shell pride themselves for fine, friendly service to visitors and hometown atmosphere. Greybull offers true Western hospitality and spectacular scenery. The development of Greybull was linked to the railroad and later, the discovery of oil. Now much of the stable local economy is in thanks to the railroad, bentonite mining and agriculture. Area attractions include the pioneer and Native American museum, dinosaur fossil beds, Sheep Mountain anticline, Devil's Kitchen, 13,000 foot Cloud Peak, the Greybull River which flows through town, the World War II airport museum, and the Old Stone Schoolhouse which in on the National Register of Historic Places and is now restored as a commercial art gallery and tourist information site. At the base of the Big Horn Mountains, this area is a nice area to live or visit!
